About CCOR
In the winter of 1996 a man needed to bring his sister, diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, from her Connecticut home to live with them in Rochester N.Y. for her final days. Everything went about as well as could be expected. He went to his job late, visited her at lunch, while his wife, a teacher, was home to care for her by 3:30. With this schedule the sister was only alone about four hours per day. One lunch hour in late January he came home and discovered his sister stuck under her hospital bed. She had been lying there unable to get free for about three hours.
He now saw that they needed help. That afternoon they started calling homecare agencies to set up services. Unfortunately, none of them could get there for 72 hours to evaluate her. The couple had to take off time from work to care for their sister in the interim. Once services were arranged for, the man found them to be completely inadequate. In the week and a half that service was supposed to be there only two shifts were filled in their entirety. That next Friday the couple had to take the sister to the emergency room, where four days later she passed away.
After the funeral the man mused "there must be a better way to treat people” than what they had experienced. He began to search for alternatives to meet the needs of individuals in distress. From what their experience and research taught them, Companion Care of Rochester was born in October of 1997. Initially, it was a non-medical agency to provide a quick response, and quality homecare for the elderly and disabled individuals who needed assistance. In 2008 the company expanded its scope of service by becoming a licensed homecare agency to provide both medical and non-medical care. The agency’s goal is to treat those cared for, and their families, like their own when the real one can’t be there.
Since our inception in 1997 the company has built its reputation by providing quality non-medical, home and personal care to that cherished person when the real family cannot be there. In today's world everyone is constantly pulled in multiple directions it is truly a privilege to offer a service which allows our clients to convalesce or age in the comfort of their home for as long as medically possibly. We have discovered that there are thousands of families facing the same dilemma – how to provide simple day to day assistance to their loved one while avoiding institutional care. Whether the service is highly skilled or basic companionship, a couple of hours or full time care, our personnel strive to encourage a safe, nurturing, independent lifestyle for you or your relative.
Our goal is to give you and your family responsive and quality service that allows you peace of mind while we care for your loved one.
The man whose sister needed care is the founder and owner of Companion Care of Rochester (CCOR), Al Gauvin. Still today, the ideals of “there must be a better way" and "treating clients like his own family” drives the company’s mission - to offer a system of services that recognizes both the dignity of the person and enhances their quality of life. Let us give you and your loved one the same care you want to provide.
